This Is Not Goth

This blog is dedicated to all that is awful and wrongly tagged as "goth". It was inspired by the lovely blog This Is Not Grunge! Disclaimer:
This blog is for amusement, and is based entirely on my own opinions.

THIS IS NOT GOTH
This is from a Black Veil Brides’ video. I think the fact that I know that it’s from a Black Veil Brides’ video means that I lose many Goth points.
Black Veil Brides are not a Goth band, they do not belong in the Goth tag, etc.

Apparently, this is Demi Lovato. A celebrity (she is still a celebrity, right?) who is not Goth and who has no ties to the Goth subculture.

bubblygoths asked: I recently saw all the commotion on this blog about and the following statement is completely unbiased and is my opinion: I honestly don't give a fuck about the genre, subgenre or any of that. It's music. Listen, enjoy and let others enjoy. Thank you. 😊

That’s an interesting opinion. I’m one of those people who can get really obsessive about genres (one of my friends will never let me live down the time I told her that a band “wasn’t just metal, they’re blackened doom metal”), but I do quite like your perspective on the topic of genres.

roguesareth asked: In response to someone else saying darkwave is no longer Goth, I haven't heard any current darkwave, but in reference to Darkwave in the 80's, Darkwave would essentially be-IMO-The "Goth" version of Newwave. ( I've also seen several people put HorrorPunk into the "goth" music category as well)

I think some horrorpunk definitely falls into the “Goth” category of music, much like some psychobilly does. They are genres outside of Goth that still sometimes fall within the borders of the sub-genre.

I am the god of fuck

THIS IS NOT GOTH

Oh wow. What an astonishingly edgy quote. So bold, so brash.

Anyways, this isn’t Goth because Marilyn Manson isn’t Goth and this quote doesn’t relate to the Goth subculture in any way.

lowereastnowhere asked: I'm afraid I have to take a little bit of issue with your definition of gothic music. Gothic rock is the originator and most important piece, but QUITE a lot of bands considered goth classics do not fall under that heading. Dead Can Dance, quite a lot of the Cure discography, and even some of Siouxsie's work with The Creature's is far from the classic definition of Goth rock, but to claim it's not gothic music is splitting hairs a bit fine.

That’s a really interesting point, and I have to admit, I agree with you. I suppose then, Gothic rock should just be considered to be at the top of the hierachy of Goth music, followed by genres like darkwave, post-punk, deathrock, etc.

vicioussioux asked: I don't understand why people even bother coming to your blog if they think you're wrong. Why waste the time?

People like being angry? I really don’t know…

What I find amusing is when they accuse me of wasting me time, when they just sent like a paragraph long angry ask to this blog.

blaz-ar-deactivated20131113 asked: Blogs like yours are so stupid. Why don't you stop being a jerk and do something with your life, instead of trying to feel superior over the internet? Sure, some things tagged as "goth" may not be "goth" to you but you stated yourself you're not the goth bible, so you just invalidated your opinion. If you really knew what goth was about, you wouldn't think about owning a blog like this. Condescending little loser

Yep, I figured that it was about time for an angry message.

I don’t do this blog for some stupid little superiority power trip, I do it for my own amusement and hopefully the amusement of others.

Would you prefer it if I said that I was the Goth bible? Because I know that there are others who would be very upset by that.

Aaaaand you finish the message by insulting me. Good job.

graveyardigan asked: Isn't Goth music divided into many genres? Deathrock, Batcave, and Gothic Rock? Darkwave isn't a subgenre of goth anymore because it is now electronic sounding which is in no way goth. It is now it's own genre. If the darkwave has a goth sound then it is Gothic Darkwave.. such as Sopor Aeternus. But what I am saying is that Darkwave isn't considered Goth anymore. xD

Basically, Goth music IS Goth rock. There are plenty of subgenres of it, and related genres, that all fall within the little circle of Goth. But ultimately, Goth music is simply just Gothic rock.
